// THE PROTOCOL

THE ARCHITECTURE OF SUBTRACTION

Four rules. None of them negotiable, and all of them for the same reason. Read them before you request clearance, because agreeing to them is the last step of intake.

WHY THEY ARE ABSOLUTE

The rules are absolute because a room cannot arrive anywhere together if three people in it are filming.

A room where the phone is merely discouraged is a room where you spend 144 minutes thinking about the phone. An absolute rule costs less attention than a negotiable one. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why there are no exceptions for anyone, including us.

The conditions require everyone. One exception is not a small exception.

// THE FOUR

THE ARCHITECTURE OF SUBTRACTION

  1. [ 01 ]

    ZERO DEVICES

    The physical cord is cut. No screens, no smartwatches, no vibration. Devices go into a box at the door and come back at the door.

    The box is locked and it stays in the room you left it in. If you are on call, or someone is waiting on a message from you, handle it before you arrive. There is no way to be reachable for part of a cycle.

  2. [ 02 ]

    ZERO OUTPUT

    Silence is the container. You are relieved of the pressure to speak, react, or perform for anyone else in the room.

    No talking from the moment the doors close to the moment you are back outside. Nothing is expected of you in return, either. Nobody will ask how it was, and there is no circle at the end.

  3. [ 03 ]

    ZERO SYNTHETICS

    No alcohol. No chemical downers. The sound in the room is the only thing altering your state.

    Prescribed medication is your own business and we do not ask about it. This rule is about arriving already dampened. If you have been drinking, you are not admitted, and the door staff do not debate it.

  4. [ 04 ]

    ZERO PERFORMANCE

    Sit, lie down, or stretch. No posture is required and none is preferred. Nobody is watching what you do.

    Sleep is not a failure of the session. Your system will do what it requires. There is no correct way to spend the 144 minutes and nobody is assessing you, including the facilitator.

Everything above is removal. What is left is one room, one sound, and a group of people doing the same thing at the same time. Nobody performing, nobody filming, including us.

// THE 144 MINUTES

WHAT HAPPENS

The sequence is fixed and it does not change between cycles. Nothing in it is improvised.

  1. BEFORE // INTAKE

    CLEARANCE

    The diagnostic, the safety screen, and the protocol acknowledgment. Completed before you are given a date. There is no way to arrive at the door without it.

  2. 00:00 // 21 MIN

    THRESHOLD

    Devices into the box. Seating. Doors close. Late arrivals are not admitted, and doors close ten minutes after the stated time.

  3. 00:21 // 13 MIN

    GATHERING

    The facilitator states the protocol aloud, then guides a short breath sequence. You may opt out of the breathing and stay seated. Nobody will ask why.

  4. 00:34 // 89 MIN

    THE CONTAINER

    Sound only. No speech. Sit, lie down, or sleep. You can leave the room at any point without explaining, and the door is never locked.

  5. 02:03 // 21 MIN

    RETURN

    The sound resolves slowly. Nobody is hurried out. Devices are returned outside the room.

THE ROOM

An acoustically treated space, a calibrated system, and low light. No screens anywhere in it. Nothing on the walls that asks for your attention.

The sound is played live in the space, by people who are present. It does not build, it does not drop, and it does not ask you to follow it.

The room is kept cool and it is kept dark. Bring layers.

This is not a concert and it is not a class. Nobody is performing and nobody is teaching.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

  • Access is 18 and over.
  • The gathering includes a guided breath sequence. The intake screens for the conditions that make it unsuitable. In almost every case the outcome is attend and sit it out, not stay away.
  • Doors close ten minutes after the stated time. Late arrivals are not admitted and access tokens are not reissued.
  • Failure to observe the protocol ends your access to the space.
  • Venue access details are published with each cycle. If you need to know whether a specific venue works for you, write to us before you request clearance and you will get a straight answer.
// LIMITED PLACES PER CYCLE

REQUEST CLEARANCE

Entry runs through a short intake. It screens for the few conditions that make the breath sequence unsuitable, and it is how you acknowledge the protocol.
